Jersey City, NJ - Hudson County Complete Streets (HCCS) will be hosting a press conference on Tuesday, May 20, at 5:00pm outside of the PATH Station at Exchange Place in Jersey City, NJ to announce 5,000+ signatures on the campaign for more frequent off-peak service and a PATH extension to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

Speakers at the event will include:

  • HCCS MC, David Ciano

  • Christopher Vasquez, Strong Towns West Hudson,

  • Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop

  • State Senator Raj Mukherji

  • Newark resident & HCCS Advisory Council member, Stephanie Martinez

  • State Senator Angela McKnight

  • Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla

  • Jersey City Council Member James Solomon

  • Hoboken City Councilmember, Emily Jabbour

  • Tri-State Transportation Campaign program manager, Corey Hannigan

  • Additional speakers to be announced

Launched in 2024, the Better PATH Campaign advocates for two critical improvements via their petition and issue brief:

  1. 5-minute off-peak PATH service on nights and weekends

  2. A direct PATH extension to Newark Airport (EWR)

Currently, PATH trains run every 2 minutes on weekdays during rush hour, but riders must wait 20-40 minutes off-peak on nights and weekends. Additionally, Hudson County residents have no direct transit access to Newark Airport (EWR) as an alternative to driving.

Hudson County’s rapid growth underscores the need for improved transit. Between 2010 and 2020, the county’s population surged 14.3%, nearly three times the statewide average of 5.3%.

HCCS volunteers have been canvassing at PATH stations for 14 weeks to raise awareness and gather signatures. To sign up to canvass, volunteers can visit https://hudcostreets.org/panynj/volunteer.

In addition to broad community support, the Better PATH campaign has the support of the business community, including the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce, and more than 19 Hudson and Essex County elected officials (see below):

QUOTES

“Safe and reliable transportation is crucial for any viable city, which is why we have invested significantly in Jersey City’s transportation infrastructure—from adding ferry services to bike share to creating an affordable on-demand microtransit system. It is unacceptable that our residents pay more money and spend more time commuting due to unreliable PATH service and the Port Authority’s failure to take long-awaited action. I’m proud to stand with thousands of residents and elected officials demanding better, smarter transit solutions.” -Mayor Steven Fulop, City of Jersey City

“A reliable, frequent, and more equitable PATH service that works for everyone, every hour of the day, every day of the week, is essential for Hoboken and Hudson County. Our residents deserve a modern transit system that reflects our region’s growth and reduces our reliance on cars. I fully support the Better PATH Campaign’s call for 5-minute off-peak service and a direct connection to Newark Airport, which will further these goals and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions." -Mayor Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla, City of Hoboken

“Hudson County is on the rise, and our residents, workers, and visitors deserve a transit system that grows with them and meets their everyday needs. Right now, PATH riders have limited access to major transit hubs like Newark Airport, and traveling anywhere during off-peak hours can turn a 10-minute trip into an hour-long inconvenience,” said Senator Angela V. McKnight. “Extending the PATH to Newark Airport and providing more frequent off-peak service are critically needed to improve reliability, affordability, and quality of life in our community.” -NJ State Senator Angela McKnight
